Which wasn't very.
"Ugh," the trainer muttered, cracking an eye open to gauge the sun. It was 'bout seven or eight. Maybe seven-thirty-ish. "Soli," the boy muttered sleepily, poking his arcanine. "Soli, it's time to get up."
The arcanine very gently patted him on the head before rolling over and going back to sleep.
Ed fumed for a few moments before getting up and stretching. He let out a breath and realized he could see it. The trainer blinked, wondering if he was still asleep. Then his eyes widened: the world was white! It wasn't snow, but the dew had frozen overnight and wow, this was so cool.
...and cold.
The trainer sat right back down next to his arcanine who might have smelled like wet dog but was nice and toasty.
He rifled into his backpack for something edible, found a fruit bar and started munching rather mechanically. Hmm. Strawberries. He offered half to Soli who wrinkled her nose and gave him a look, even with her eyes closed. Ed shrugged, hey, more for him. Took another bite.
He heard the steady drumming of giant wings before he heard the trainer. Glanced up and spotted a red hat and coat before the sun forced him to close his eyes and look away. He tried, somewhat unsuccessfully, to blink away the glare from the sun.
He waved at the pidgeot. The pidgeot chirped a greeting.
Its trainer was not quite so sanguine.
"Ed," little-miss-perfect yelled shrilly, "did you sleep in a ditch?!"
Since it was obvious he had slept in a ditch, Ed felt that he should roll his eyes. He didn't. He was a grown-up now. "Yup." He answered cheerfully, still chewing. "Want some breakfast?"
"Ye- NO." There was a moment of disgruntled silence as his childhood friend fought to keep her temper in check. Ed continued methodically chewing: it was one thing to sleep in a ditch, quite another to go through the day without adequate nutrition.
"I'm so telling your mom when we get back home-" Mary huffed. Ed shrugged, they'd get back in a year. But she added, conscientiously, if in rather bad grace: "need a lift?"
"I'll make it there soon," Ed said, waving her off. She looked a bit skeptical but didn't disagree: her pidgeot banked hard before shooting back into the cold morning sky.
Ed watched her leave before poking his arcanine again. He tried not to make it sound like he was whining. How come she could make her evolved pokemon listen to her when his-
Grrr.
"Sooooli-"
